3 Things To Avoid When Writing Metal
Don’t sweat the small stuff—these 3 tips will keep your songwriting on track.
At Loudstakk, my main goal is simple: to help you write songs faster.
One of the quickest ways to get bogged down in the songwriting process is by obsessing over details that don’t really matter… at least not yet.
Here are three things you should NOT focus on when writing:
1. Perfecting the Drums
I get it—you want killer drums. Maybe you have a specific idea in mind, but diving into drum details too soon is a recipe for creative disaster.
Instead, use MIDI grooves as placeholders. They’ll keep your workflow moving and help remind you of your ideas later when your song’s structure is complete.
The point is to stay in the flow of inspiration, not get stuck tweaking every hit.
2. Agonizing Over Guitar Tones
This one is a creativity killer, and I’ve learned the hard way.
Here’s the truth: all you need is a tone that’s good enough to jam with and puts you in the right mood.
Move on with writing—the perfect tone can come later. For now, focus on getting your ideas recorded!
3. Writing From Start to Finish
Trying to write from intro to outro is a fast track to frustration.
Instead, open your DAW and jam out your idea. Experiment with variations, riffs, or beats. Don’t stop to judge whether it’s “good”—just write.
The magic happens when you let go of perfection and focus on the big picture. The first draft doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to exist.
This is exactly what our Loudstakk MIDI Grooves and guitar tone packs are designed for: helping you write faster and more efficiently without overthinking.
